To what extent do you think political divisiveness in 21st-century America arises from the absence of a single group to scapegoat—or from the growing dominance of scientific authority, which makes such scapegoating increasingly difficult? Was a large part of the post-9/11 sense of unity driven by the ability of American society to collectively blame the terrorists?

Just starting to explore Girard—would love to hear your thoughts.
