Nothing Can Redeem an Ugly Face | Halloween Special on Frankenstein
The True Horror of Frankenstein
Hey everyone, we are looking to bring on editors who can help us cut long form content into viral shorts and clips. If you know of anyone really good who knows my content well and can, with little guidance create short form content, reply to this email!
Excited to share a halloween special on Frankenstein.
What struck me reading Frankenstein was how NOT scared I was (and I can assure you it’s not my horror-tolerance, I haven’t dared watch a single scary movie since I was permanently scarred by Mummy Returns as a kid).
The reason is because of how “ethical” the monster was: he is shown to have a rational, gentle, and caring soul in the beginning. And even in his murderous rampage he (allegedly) feels remorse, which is distinctly different from a classical villain like Satan in Paradise Lost or Iago in Othello.
So the question is: what causes an “ethical” soul to be so corrupted? The obvious answer appears to be his ugliness. But how?
Answering these questions led me down a rabbit hole exploring all the different ways ugliness corrupts, the lost discipline of physiognomy, and what we have lost in modernity by abandoning the classical idea that the beautiful is the good.
This is my first animated video essay, let me know what you think about this format in the comments! Happy Halloween!
